How to get your dog to stay

The Stay Command

The Stay command teaches your dog to remain in a designated position until released, regardless of distractions or activity around them. It is one of the most important obedience commands because it promotes patience, self-control, and safety in everyday situations.

A reliable stay can be useful in countless real-world scenarios. Whether you need your dog to wait at a doorway, remain calm while guests enter your home, stay in place during a family gathering, or hold position while you retrieve something, the stay command provides structure and control. It helps prevent behaviors such as door rushing, jumping on visitors, chasing distractions, and wandering into unsafe areas.

Training the stay command requires dogs to resist the urge to move, even when exciting things are happening around them. As a result, the exercise naturally builds impulse control and confidence. Dogs learn that remaining calm and patient is rewarding, which often carries over into other areas of behavior and obedience.

As training progresses, dogs learn to maintain their stay for longer periods, at greater distances, and around increasing levels of distraction. This creates a dependable response that owners can rely on both at home and in public settings.

At Austin Dog Manners, we teach the stay command as a fundamental part of creating a well-mannered and responsive companion. We focus on building reliability through clear communication, consistency, and practical real-world applications. Owners are also shown how to properly reinforce the behavior so it remains strong over time.

A solid stay command is more than simply asking your dog not to move. It is a valuable skill that improves safety, strengthens obedience, and helps create a calm, respectful relationship between dog and owner. When taught correctly, stay becomes one of the most useful commands your dog can learn.
