Dogs That Bolt Out the Door: Why It Happens and How to Stop It
Why It Happens and How to Stop It
Door bolting is a common and dangerous behavior in dogs. Whether they’re excited, fearful, or curious, dogs that dart out of doors or gates can put themselves in serious danger. Understanding the cause and teaching proper boundaries is essential for safety and peace of mind.
Common Causes of Door Bolting
Overexcitement when people arrive or leave
Fear or anxiety triggering a flight response
Curiosity or desire to explore outdoors
Lack of boundaries or training around doors
Learned habit of escaping
How to Stop Dogs From Bolting
A structured training approach is essential. Strategies include:
Teaching “Wait” and “Sit” at all doors before entry/exit
Using leashes or safety gates during transitions
Positive reinforcement for calm behavior
Consistent routines to prevent impulse rushing
Controlled practice sessions to reinforce safety
With repetition and proper guidance, dogs learn that doors are not an invitation to bolt.
Benefits of Door Training
Keeps dogs safe from traffic, strangers, and other hazards
Reduces stress for owners
Builds impulse control and reliability
Strengthens communication and trust between dog and owner
Professional training ensures the techniques are tailored to your dog’s personality and energy level, creating a safer, calmer home environment.

Within 5 minutes of meeting our 6-month- old mixed breeds, she had them paying close attention. Her focus was more on training us to train the dogs. Yes. Owner transfer is a critical part of our program. We provide hands-on training sessions so you understand how to maintain structure, reinforce commands, and confidently handle your dog at home.
How much does your Board & Train program cost?
Our premium Board & Train programs range from $2,500 to $5,500 depending on the severity of the behavior and length of training required. We discuss exact pricing after evaluating your dog.
Is my dog too old (or too far gone) to be trained?
No. While early training is ideal, dogs of all ages can learn with the right structure and consistency. We’ve successfully worked with older dogs and those with long-standing behavior issues by creating clear boundaries, rebuilding confidence, and implementing a consistent training system.
